Student Nurses questions and answers

Got questions about Student Nurses, well we've got the answers at Nursing Online Learning.

Q: Student nurses!?
Can any student nurses give me advice on what the nursing course, placements ect are like. I'm starting a degree course in sept for adult nursing. Thank you.

A: course itself is ok, basically human biology and psychology. Placements for me were 13 hour shifts normally so long and tiring days. they'll have you doing more than your fair share f nights as well so be prepared for that - i wasn't! but all in all i was generally treated well and enjoyed it

Q: Any mental health nurses or student mental health nurses out there?
Just wondering if there are any mental health nurses or mental health student nurses who could give me some advice? I am currently studing children's nursing and coming to the end of my first year but I am thinking of changing to mental health nursing. I am intrigued by the issues faced by people with mh issues&I am interested in the theraputic aspect of nursing&talking to patients. The only reason I did not chose it in the first place was due to the stories I had heard about the violence that you can come up against etc. Any advice? Thanks!

A: I am a child health nurse working within Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services; have done since finishing uni 18 months ago. Being worried about violence within mental health is a common anxiety but actually it is not as common as is made out. Depends on your client group. If you want to talk about this further then I'd be happy to give you some info.... I was about the only one in my cohort interested in CAMHS so didn't have anyone to talk to about it! Email me if you want to know more.

Q: student nurses?
hi, i am now starting my training, i have books but can any1 please give me some good sites they used for research please. thanks

A: Cinahl, Meditext, Pubmed, or just look on google scholar.

Q: Are there any UK student nurses that can help me?
could somebody please tell me the required work placement section of being a student nurse? how many weeks in yr 1, 2 and 3 of the nursing RN BSc (Hons) im looking into going to uni next year and would like to know the required placement blocks.

A: I am a link mentor in A+E. The sept intake this year in Paisley for example is running 3 15 weekly blocks in a 3 year course. Year 1 is 10 wks college 5 wks out, 5 wks college 10 wks out, then 6 wks out 5 wks college then catch up time. Year 2 is 10 wks in 5 wks out, 10 wks out 5 wks in, 6 out 5 in then c/up Year 3 is 10 wks in 5 wks out, 5-6 wks out then an unfilled space of 4 wks approx the 5 wks in, then the final 9-12 wks placement where your link mentor (me) can sign you off as capable to do the job. This may vary in differnet areas but the required hours in and out must be to a nationally agreed limit. Hope that all helps.

Q: can british student nurses have a temporary placement abroad while they are studying?
and if not,can newly qualified nurses work abroad? is there any age limitations? country limitations? is it hard to work abroad as a nurse? how do you go about it?

A: Cant say... But yes its easy to work as a nurse abroab

Q: did you allow student nurses to watch your delivery?
When I went into labor my nurse asked me if it would be ok if a student nurse could watch the delivery of my son. Since I am a nurse I was able to observe a c-section while in nursing school and loved the experience so I agreed. Well come delivery time I ended up with three students and the nursing instructor in my room lol. On top of that my husband, the doctor two nurses and the nursery nurse lol looking back I'm like wow there must have been no other babies born that morning at all.

A: My wife did let 2 students observe. I didn't have a problem either way. To the "RN of 40 years" You have stories, hmm? Do tell. On a side note -- I'm proud of anyone who let the students in the room because yes, they do have to learn from somewhere, and a video won't do it. No wonder they get such a hard time for not knowing anything... because no one will let them know anything! I think the tenured workers feel threatened by the students and feel that the students should not learn faster than they ever did, and need to "pace themselves." This is a result of pure jealously and is an unethical defensive move to try to save their job.

Q: why do diploma student nurses get the NHS bursary but degree student nurses dont?
Yes, but the dfference is that diploma students get a really high, non-means tested bursary whereas degree students get a relatively low, means-tested bursary. Should have specified, sorry. Why is this?

A: ask gorgon brown

Q: Any student nurses? Or if your already a nurse want to answer a question?
NCLEX RN Question... The nurse assists the phyisican with the removal of a chest tube. During the removal of the chest tube the nurse instructs the client to: 1. Breathe out forcefully. 2. Breathe in deeply. 3. Hold his or her breath. 4. Breath normally Do you enjoy answering these nursing questions? I enjoy posting them for you to keep your nursing skill sharp, and for new nurses its an excellent learning tool.

A: 3

Q: What are the effects of Impaired Nurses/Student Nurse on Nursing Profession?
Impaired nurse refers to a nurse whose practice has been affected because of chemical abuse.. please help me..tnx!

A: I'm assuming you mean substance abuse. If so, as a student, the college has a right to enforce some disciplinary action such as expel you. If it leads to a criminal offense and goes on your record, you may have trouble obtaining a nursing license if your school allows you to graduate. That's the worst case scenario. If you are already a nurse, the job may fire you or report you to your state board of nursing. The board can revoke your nursing license or, most likely, make it mandatory for you to attend a rehab program in order for you to continue working as a nurse.

Q: do student nurses in the army get a bursary?
im 16 and looking to join army as a student nurse but im confused whether you get paid or not for training and uni?

A: You do indeed. But you'll have to spend your holidays doing military training. And you don't get a choice of uni. Google the Britsh army jobs website and email them for an information pack.

Q: Can I have some help with my upcoming university interview for student nurses?
I really would like a place at the particular university I applied to: I would appreciate any help with my interview.

A: Can you be more specific as to the kind of help you need. I can tell you the sort of questions generally asked in interviews and the best sort of answers to give - but that could take a while if you're not specific about what you want to know. Add some more information or email me.

Q: Question for student Nurses or fully qualified Nurse?
I have always wanted to be a nurse, but have always been held back by the fact that I dont like needles. Stupid I know, but I have decided this time I will not let something minor get in my way of wanting to help others. Could you please tell me if you had any fears about nursing and did you get used to them when caring for others?

A: Once you come in contact with needles regularly, you will get over your fears. I don't have a problem sticking people, yet, I don't like to get stuck. I'm getting better about it tho. Good luck with your education. Don't let your fears stop you from anything.

Q: Do any other student nurses out there feel like they are just an extra HCA on placement?
Hey don't get me wrong I know u have to learn basic patient care when ur a student and I like doing it but not all the time. On one ward I was not allowed to work with my mentor as the other side of the ward was busier and was a HCA down. Which I did not like as i am not there to cover up their staff shortages. I have had many other instances like this happen 2 me!!!

A: yeh this has happened to me on past placements, unfortunately some wards seems to see students as a spare pair of hands when we're supposed to be supernumerary. i don't know what year you're in but it gets a bit easier once you're in 3rd year as you have designated patients to look after and you simply cannot go to help when you have a duty to them. on the other hand we do work part of a team and there are times when everyone has to help each other out, but if it happens on a regular basis it's not right. oh i could go on forever about this lol. if it continues to be a problem for you i recommend talking to your link lecturer, let them know what's happening, especially if it's effecting your learning. xx

Q: I need a standardized tool for the assessment of needle stick injuries among student nurses?
or maybe other research tools related to the occurrence of needle stick injuries among healthcare workers... for an undergraduate thesis. If possible the ones that are absolutely free of charge would suffice. @jane doe thanks for the tip I really appreciate it but unfortunately for me our library has yet to purchase one, ProQuest is like a thousand bucks a month I think? They just gave their promo talk two weeks ago and it was promising but our school is too financially incapable as of now. Thank you for the suggestion.

A: ask your university if they will provide OHS statistical reports related to the topic, and mention that it's for educational purposes and no personal details will be given out. your university should also provide access to students for online journals which are an invaluable resource - speak to a uni librarian about this, and if you don't have access, find out how you can get it. It should be free as the uni buys the subscriptions. A few examples of online searchable journal databases are JSTOR and ProQuest, but your uni should have it's own portal that links all major journal providers.
